xMoto levels in other games?

Hi Guys!
I'm Making a game for android that can load the xMoto .lvl format. see here: http://www.appbrain.com/app/wheel-2d-ph ... d.BikeGame You are a Monster truck, not a motorbike (much simpler!)
To be clear - I am NOT using any exising xMoto levels!
But I am interested in doing so!
Most levels do not load correctly - some never will, as the game advances more levels will load right, but still an android device is alot less powerfull so complex levels will bring it to its knees. Many levels would never play right as my vehicle simulation model is simpler, and very different

I guess what I am asking is... Whats OK with you guys? is anyone interested in any way?

Im thinking about adding an option to play on a motorbike - but still have alot of other basic features to do first (and I expect, bugs to fix)

XMoto levels are GPL, so you can use them as long as you stick to the license.

Good news! do you mean just the levels in the default package? or also user submitted ones?

Im very clear about how GPL applies to code - but not so much data.
My game is currently closed source - and I'd like to keep it that way for a little while at least...
if I copy levels into my source code - I must of course open my source :)
If I write a downloader, I guess I can keep it closed for now.
What about packing some levels into my main distribution? know where I would stand?

I am not too familiar with licence stuff too, but if you use the level data, you must supply them in the lvl format for every one can open them I guess.
I dont think its a problem having the game source closed but level data available. But including levels in some hardcoded way should not be done afaik.
If sb knows more about this, feel free to give infos.

basically,
the xmoto level are not a part of the xmoto source code.
it's like each level is a GPL program.
you can distribute them with your package, but you must include the GPL licence text in your package and precise in the readme for example (but a file in the package) that the levels are gpl (see COPYING file in the xmoto packages) .
Moreover, you must give a way to get sources of the lvl files (the modified version if you modify them) (by including them as .lvl in your package, by giving a link to the sources to internet or by giving a way to unpack them like xmoto does (xmoto store them in a xmoto.bin file)

Alternatively you can ask the level authors to dual-license their level under whatever license your using and the GPL.

in fact it false, you cannot include gpl levels while you can combine these files only with gpl compatible files.
it would be true if levels were lgpl.
so, in fact, you're just allowed to use inksmoto to create new levels non gpl.
the 2nd solution is to ask levels maker to make their level as dual licence. Unfortunally, i don't like non gpl software, so, getting email of people maker for levels you want will not be free. And it will not conclude as a double licence for these levels. In the non gpl world, money is required ;-)

You can dual-license the level under a commercial one and under GPL. The xmoto project would use the GPL license, and the Android app would use the commercial one. I see no problem there?

However, the same cannot be said for the other authors. And why? Bigger audience it one reason I can think of.

I'll try and give xMoto a bunch of publicity (though I doubt my lil game will ever be as big) and be careful not to break the licence of the packaged GPL levels - or other users levels who may not be GPL :)

When I can afford to eat three times a day I'll GPL my game too :D

not that we speak only about the .lvl files.
Textures are gpl too, so, it's not only the dual licence from the lvl author that is needed.

Textures are not stored in the level data?
In any case he can do the same for textures/create his own.

I'd be willing to give my levels to this game for free... (And make more just for it, if it uses Inkscape)

Although, I don't have an android xd
